Jimmy and Nancy Byrge are the creators of a new home page on the world wide web for
local author Virginia Hamilton. The page includes links to a wealth of information about
Hamilton, who has won every major award for her children's books, and about the books she
has written.
Browsers on this page can also call up information about awards Hamilton has received,
her publishers and upcoming talks she is giving or conferences she is attending. An
abundance of graphics illustrate the text. The page also provides access to information
about Hamilton's husband, poet Arnold Adoff, and their children, Jaime Levi and Leigh
Adoff.
"There are so many places in America that aren't open to me" because of
geographical constraints, said Hamilton. "Through the internet, I have the whole
world. That pleases me." She is particularly pleased about the access to her and her
work the internet will provide students in the schools. "It's just incredible what's
going to happen," she said of the doors that will open through the internet.
Included in Hamilton's home page is an e-mail link that will allow users to communicate
with her directly. She promises, she said, to answer all correspondence and admits to
spending a fair amount of time surfing the web herself "You get the feeling of a
consciousness, of people out there breathing," she said. "You can roam all over
the world."
In contrast to Hamilton's enthusiasm about computer technology, Arnold
Adoff has not yet left the garage for a spin on the information superhighway and
doesn't seem inclined to do so. "I still use my old Smith Corona to write," he
said. "I back away when Virginia turns on the computer."
Hamilton's home page, which is always evolving and adding interesting new features, may
be reached at http://www.virginiahamilton.com. Her e-mail address, which can also be
accessed via the home page is bodeep@aol.com.
Persons having problems reaching her at her web site are asked to contact Jimmy or
