Every black person had to have a pass. It was a crime not to have one, a crime to have one in the wrong place, a crime not to have a job, a crime too have the wrong job, a crime to be in a white area after dark, ad infinitum. Photo shows Mandela burning his pass before the fall of Apartheid.
